Chanel Makeover & Review of Illusion D'Ombre Eyeshadows

Howdy!  This is a long overdue (my apologies!) follow-up of my Chanel Fall 2011 makeup shopping extravaganza posted here.

About a month ago, I had booked in a makeover at the Chanel counter at David Jones as soon as I was informed that their makeup artists were organising another event to launch their fall collection and I suspect, also the new fragrance 'No. 19' which is Coco Chanel's birthday.  Of course, it was highly coincidental that my booking was on the 19th of August as well.  Personally, I had no idea - I started off loving their makeup range after trying it out early this year, not the brand itself.  Luckily I was given a sample of this perfume along with a Chanel beauty makeup bag and other sample goodies.  So, I was happy. ^_^

So as part of this makeover, my plan was to see how best to apply the new eye shadows and try out other products that I've been keen to get my hands on for a while.  Mind you, if you weren't already aware, I had already bought several items from the collection as soon as they were released last month (see here)!  I couldn't help it!  Also, I didn't want to miss out on any limited edition items.  Although I'm very annoyed that I cannot get the real answer about which is limited or not!  Every time I've asked a different person, they each give a different answer.  So perhaps, no one really knows.  Not even the Chanel sales assistants. Grrr...  The last answer I got from the makeup artist was that they were all permanent (incl all of the nail polishes) except for one item which is the eye pencil in Khaki Platine.  Whatever the answer, I got a backup of my favourite nail polish from the collection called 'Graphite' just in case!  I highly recommend this!  If anyone does actually know about LE items - please leave a comment as I'm really keen to find out once and for all.

Anyway, after trying out some products during this makeup session I had, I also purchased a couple more items from the collection:

  • Illusion D'ombre eye shadow in Mirifique (#85)
  • Rouge Coco lipstick in Plumetis (peach beige).

Illusion D'ombre eye shadow in Mirifique (#85).
(As you can see on the bottom of the picture, I already dipped my brush into it! :) )

In the makeup session, I also tried out the Joues Contraste in 'Rose Ecrin', which is soft rose, but appeared a bit more brown on my olive tan skin tone, but still quite nice with a smokey eye look.  I was worried it would not show up, but it does.  I did not purchase this as I have far too many blushes at the moment and did not find this unique enough based on what I already have.

(Note, I also bought a couple of other items that are not from the collection, and are permanent: Natural finish loose powder in Dore and Rouge Allure Laque in Dragon (#75)).

Texture
Very soft and smooth mousse to soft spongey texture.

Colour & Pigmentation
Sheer to intense pigmentation depending on application technique (see 'Application' recommendations below).  Very shimmery.  The shimmer tends to fall and spread fairly easily, so you just need to tidy up under the eyes - not that I minded as I quite liked the look to be honest.  (Note, I've been wearing this without any eye primer).  At first glance, the colours remind me of the eye shadow quint from the Chanel spring 2011 collection (one of my favourites!), but they're actually not the same when I swatched them myself (The Beauty Look Book also did a nice comparison between the two here).  Certainly there is a lot more shimmer in the fall 2011 eye shadows.  Here are the individual colours:

  • Emerveille (#82): peach/champagne - very versatile.  Lovely for everyday wear or paired with bold lips.
  • Illusoire (#83): purpley, silvery grey - lovely for smokey yet shimmery look for the evening (or day if worn alone or applied simply and lightly).
  • Epatant (#84): khaki green - lovely for everyday wear or evening, especially when paired with coral/peachy cheeks and lips.
  • Mirifique (#85): black with multicoloured shimmer - very beautiful!  (Unfortunately, I could not capture the multicoloured shimmers on camera, and appears silvery instead).  I was going to give this eyeshadow a miss, but discovered its brilliance when I had my Chanel makeover (where this was used as an eye liner then blended up and out in the outer corners of my eyes to give a shadow effect).  It really looks stunning!
  • Ebloui (#86): marone/red brown - universally flattering (looks great on all eye colours).  Again, I was going to give this a miss, but I thought I'd give it a try since I don't have anything like it and am a little weary of reddy colour on the eyes giving my that 'sore' eye look we want to avoid!  On the contrary, I was pleasantly surprised as it looks very beautiful so I'm quite glad I got this. ^_^

Swatches L - R: Mirifique, Ebloui, Illusoire, Epatant, and Emerveille.

After giving a quick wipe clean with makeup remover, you can see that the one remaining is 'Mirifique', so I would suggest it is most suitable for eye lining due to its extra longevity.

Application
For sheer application, rub a little between finger tips first (or dab onto the back of your hand) and using the warmth your skin generates, apply to the eye lid.  You can build the colour intensity by applying more layers.  Avoid taking a clump and applying directly to the lid as it may be difficult to blend out evenly.  The Chanel makeup artist that did my makeover highly recommends applying the product using the brush applicator that comes with it.  I tried using the brush and found this the easiest and quickest to apply.  The brush is made perfectly for applying this uniquely textured product and also perfect for applying it as eye liner.  The brush also applies the product with excellent pigmentation compared to applying with fingers.

Longevity
Excellent lasting power as it's name suggests.  The product stayed on from 9am til midnight on me!  I didn't really notice any colour loss during the day either, which was brilliant.

Packaging
Weighty glass pot packaging with typical Chanel black lacquer plastic screw on lid.  Label of product description and colour on bottom.  This type of packaging makes it a bit inconvenient to travel with, but nonetheless sits nicely on the dressing table. ;-)

Size
4g / 0.14 oz.

Price
AU$48

Overall Recommendation
If you can afford it; love Chanel; love the sophisticated chic, very modern and very shimmery eye look then this is for you.  I can see the product would last me a long time as you only need a tiny bit using the brush to give you intense application.  If you have little time/patience for eye shadow application then this is for you as it comes with the *perfect* brush just for it (else use your finger tips) - easy!  I would recommend you check this out at the counter to try for yourself as it's quite an interesting texture and you can see the effect it gives in person.  Personally, I'm very impressed with these eye shadows!
