Romancing the October Holiday Cupboard

Last year for the "first" October Holiday Cupboard, it was natural for me to come up with a whimsical theme for late October. But this year, as I do in any seasonal display, I like to stretch a little bit and use different vintage items to create something seasonal and holiday compatible. So instead of just using vintage pumpkins and Fall critters (which I love), this time I brought out some "romantic" vintage items to give it an altogether new look.

I'm using my Brown Transferware mix and match pieces along with a couple of ironstone tureens and platters for a backdrop. I added in a few antique candleholder sets, vintage prints, and metal flower frogs that work together to convey a romantic late Fall feel.

Below is a beautiful handmade millinery rose made from

hand stamped fabric and a vintage rhinestone brooch.

A pair of vintage celluloid cherub candleholders.

A small floral creamer in autumnal colors

that my husband found for me.

A small Victorian look bust of a young girl in chalkware.

... a celluloid postcard/print of Anne Hathaway's cottage

in Stratford-on-Avon.

I just can't resist a few blooms in mauve of dried hydrangeas.

I've enjoyed my hydrangeas so much this year.

They started in white, then to pink and mauve, then to deep mauve and purple.

I wish this delicate figural porcelain vase had a marking,

but I know it's a very old Art Nouveau piece.

This brown with pink floral transferware patterned platter

is another piece my husband found for me

in his "proxy" flea market shopping.

Of course I have to add in a few paper mache pumpkins and gourds

to plop in the sugar and creamer.

This pair of old tole candlesticks were once electrified from my mom's stash.

A Raphael Tuck vintage postcard from English Cathedrals.

Vintage framed Frenchy prints from the 1960's.

For me, the key to putting together shelves or a display

is to use not only themed pieces,

but hues that most often reflects the natural seasonal color.

But most of all, I like to have fun and be creative.

I took a few of these pics from the Garden Room

on a very cloudy day,

so they're not the best, and have a lot of shadows.

(it's pouring again today...)

We used to be able to find wild Bittersweet at garden centers

or out in the wayside but not for the last several years.

So this dried piece is from several years ago that I've saved.

I hope you enjoy the Holiday Cupboard as much as I do putting it together.

Well, that might be hard since I find it such a fun creative outlet.

I love seeing it come together for each season.

It's sort of like a "doll house" for dishes and collectibles!
