Opening on December 9th, 2002 and closing on January 25th 2003, the Broadway Musical version of Roman Polanski’s “
The Fearless Vampire Killers” entitled, “
Dance of The Vampires”, played an underwhelming 56 performances at the Minskoff Theatre.
It should be noted that this musical actually played longer when it was only in previews (61 showings), than it did in actual performances – I don’t know if that means anything in the world of Broadway shows, but it’s a fact nonetheless.
With music by
Jim Steinman (the songwriter that gave
Meatloaf two of his best selling albums as well as
Bonnie Tyler’s “
classic”, “
Total Eclipse of the Heart”),
Dance…was to have been the big thing on stage, enticing even The Phantom of The Opera himself,
Michael Crawford to put another cape on so that he could
strut and
fret, and
sing.
While the critics
lambasted the production, they were impressed by the lavish sets and overall look of the show.
Ultimately the show lost its investors some 12 million dollars (just weeks before it closed a television ad was shot to rekindle public curiosity in the show, it cost around 300,000, and apparently did nothing to help).
In the end, the
stake was plunged into “
The Dance of The Vampires”.
I personally know one person who saw this show. He is a good friend and a semi-constant reader of this site, hopefully he will grace us with his review as I recall him saying he enjoyed the show…
OH KLAUS, The Children of The Night are Calling!
